NextGenCooling: Paving the way for sustainable cooling

It's that time of the year again when we celebrate the marvels of cooling technology and its crucial role in our lives. Welcome to World Refrigeration Day 2023, where we're all about embracing the theme of #NextGenCooling. This year, we're diving headfirst into the need for innovative and sustainable cooling solutions that not only meet the increasing demand but also help us achieve our global energy efficiency and net zero goals.

So, while you are sipping your favourite chilled beverage on this hot summer’s day, consider the role our industry has played in getting that drink to you and join us on our journey to the Next Generation of cooling.

The Net Zero Challenge

One of the biggest challenges we face is the ever-increasing need for cooling while simultaneously striving to meet our net zero ambitions. In the UK, like in many other nations, there's a growing urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards a net zero future.

Under the terms of the Climate Change Act, we need to deliver net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This ambitious goal encompasses all sectors, and that also means us, the cooling industry. If we are to stand any chance of reaching that goal, we must find innovative ways to satisfy the rising demand for cooling without compromising our commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Cooling systems play a vital role in various sectors, such as retail, healthcare, hospitality, and food storage. However, they also contribute significantly to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve our net zero targets, we must prioritise sustainable cooling solutions that are both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

One key aspect of net zero cooling is transitioning from high-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants to low-GWP alternatives. These refrigerants have a significantly lower impact on the environment, reducing the emissions of harmful greenhouse gases.

The UK continues to work towards the phase down targets set by the F-Gas regulations, which aims to reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and promote the adoption of greener alternatives, although we are continually mindful of the extra skills and safety challenges this creates.

Addressing the Skills Gap

While we're committed to revolutionising the cooling industry, we must acknowledge the challenges posed by our skills gap. As the demand for innovative and sustainable cooling solutions grows, there is a pressing need for a new generation of skilled engineers to bridge this gap – who are also able to cope with the surge in use of alternative refrigerants.

Our critical shortage of qualified air conditioning engineers is a serious cause for concern. According to recent statistics, the demand for cooling engineers has surged by 40% in the past decade, while the number of skilled professionals entering the field has remained relatively stagnant. This disparity underscores the urgent need to attract and train the next generation of engineers to ensure a sustainable future for the cooling industry.

Training the Next Generation

To address the skills shortage, initiatives are being launched to encourage more young people to consider a career in our sector. Training programmes, apprenticeships, and vocational courses are becoming increasingly important in nurturing the skills required to develop, maintain, and optimise sustainable cooling systems.

By equipping the next generation with the necessary expertise, we can create a workforce that is well-versed in the latest technologies and possesses a deep understanding of sustainable cooling practices. This will enable us to meet the growing demand for cooling while staying true to our net zero aspirations.

Collaboration and Innovation

Delivering Next Generation Cooling also requires collaboration between several stakeholders. Governments, industry leaders, and professionals must join forces to develop and implement innovative technologies that drive sustainability. This means embracing renewable energy sources, optimising system designs, and promoting energy-efficient practices.

Fortunately, the industry is already witnessing remarkable advancements in cooling technology. From evaporative cooling and thermoelectric systems to magnetic refrigeration and solar-driven air conditioning, the possibilities are expanding.

So, anybody looking for a career where they can make a significant and long-lasting contribution to the future of the planet and their local communities could do a lot worse than seeing what the world of air conditioning and refrigeration has to offer.

Enjoy WRD and help us bring on the next generation!

www.worldrefrigerationday.org
